Mr. Stephen Su, General Director of IEK, delivered a presentation on “Opportunities and Challenges in Manufacturing for Taiwan.” For the past twenty years, Taiwan’s OEM/ODM companies have helped the industry to develop strong manufacturing competence in the market. However, declining value-add and increasing capital investment have presented challenges for Taiwan’s manufacturing industries. In this presentation, three key manufacturing industries, ICT, machinery, material/chemical have been analyzed for their performance in 2012, and for their future forecast by 2015. Several key global trends such as shale gas development and re-industrialization in US will have major impact on Taiwan’s manufacturing industries. Opportunities for Taiwan in manufacturing include establishing Taiwan as a regional manufacturing headquarters, transforming into service-oriented manufacturing, leveraging ICT strengths for other industries, building service-based applications ecosystems, and more cooperation with global partners for technology development.
